For over three decades, the Nissan Sentra compact sedan has been one of the company’s most popular models, outsold only by the Nissan Altima and Nissan Rogue. With seven generations of production under its belt, the Sentra has sold over four million models in the United States alone, and more than 93 percent of those Sentras sold in the last ten years are still on the road today.
Renewed interest among drivers since the unveiling of the latest generation design in 2012 has rapidly turned the Sentra into one of Nissan’s fastest growing nameplates, and the significantly refreshed 2016 model keeps that substantial momentum rolling with tastefully revised exterior styling and the introduction of an expanded suite of available driver assistance and safety systems.
Pierre Loing, vice president, Product Planning, Nissan North America, Inc., said that Nissan has reimagined all of its top three sedan nameplates.
"In what is turning out to be 'the year of the sedan,' Nissan has made major changes to our three best-known sedans – launching an all-new Maxima 4-Door Sports Car, a major makeover of our number one selling Altima, and now a redesigned Sentra," Loing said.
That redesign has transformed the trio into a stylistic reflection of the dramatic new design language of the dynamic Nissan Murano, and brought the Sentra closer to the upscale look and feel of the Maxima and Altima.
As with earlier models, the Sentra's exterior styling continues to communicate contemporary elegance and refinement, projecting an executive character that appeals to an upwardly mobile driver with aspirations of driving the best in the segment. Some of the upscale stylistic flourishes include chrome door handles and window accents.
And for those seeking a sportier aesthetic, the 2016 Nissan Sentra SR trim offers 17-inch forked 5-spoke aluminum-alloy wheels, lower body side sill extensions, rear spoiler with integrated LED brake light, fog lights and chrome exhaust tip finisher.
Shiro Nakamura, senior vice president and chief creative officer at Nissan Motor Co., Ltd., said that these stylistic shifts capture the design philosophy of the company and the aspirations of drivers.
"A major element of Nissan's 'Innovation that excites' philosophy is innovative styling that continues to excite buyers throughout the entire period of ownership," Nakamura said. "The 2016 Sentra's new exterior adds a sense of sportiness to the refined style and proportions, as well as adding a strong connection to the Nissan sedan and crossover family."
