Nissan’s first LEAF spearheaded a revolution in all-electric vehicles (EVs) in 2010. Since then, other automobile companies have experimented with EV concerts, but the LEAF remains the undisputed favorite, with 185,000 current LEAF owners worldwide.
So it’s not surprising to find Nissan “leading the charge” again with the reengineered 2016 LEAF, a swift and efficient EV with EPA-estimated best-in-class range of 107 miles, an increase of nearly 20 miles over the previous model year.
An improved, more powerful 30kWh battery powers an super responsive 80kW AC synchronous motor, cranking out 107 horsepower and 187 lb-ft of torque. And unlike combustion engines, 100% of that torque is available the instant you press the pedal. The smooth, consistent acceleration of the new Nissan LEAF mimics the classic feel of the a finely-tuned V6 engine, making the LEAF as fun to drive as it is economical.
Andrew Speaker, director of Nissan EV Sales & Marketing, said the new LEAF’s battery doesn’t just offer longer range, it also provides enhanced performance.
"The new battery offers more advantages than just the 27 percent increase in driving range – it also offers improved battery performance," Speaker said. "Nissan has been a leading developer of lithium-ion battery technology for more than 20 years. The new LEAF battery is a great example of how rather than just increasing battery capacity, we've achieved a balance between capacity, packaging, durability and affordability.”
The LEAF’s independent strut suspension with stabilizer bar in front and torsion beam rear suspension with integrated stabilizer bar provide a velvet-smooth ride, and a precision vehicle-speed-sensitive electric power steering system offers swift, responsive handling.
Power-assisted front vented disc/solid rear disc brakes with Anti-lock Braking System (ABS), Electronic Brake Force Distribution (EBD) and Brake Assist offer maximum brake response speed and efficiency for those times when all that matters is safely stopping.
A high-tech regenerative braking system comes standard on all 2016 LEAF models, which helps to increase range. Friction from braking will act as electric generator, transforming waste energy into extra battery power. A super-regenerative “B mode” offers even more aggressive regenerative benefits while decelerating, making the LEAF even more environmentally and wallet friendly.
The new LEAF’s unique exterior styling is absolutely breathtaking. The LEAF’s body is a unique fusion of upscale sophistication and fluid elegance, with intensely aerodynamic lines that reduce drag and raise the profile of this unusually sporty EV.
If you’re thinking about going green with an all-electric vehicle like the 2016 Kia Soul EV, the 2016 Volkswagen E-Golf, the 2016 Chevrolet Volt, or the 2016 BMWi3, you may prefer the higher performance values and more innovative engineering of the 2016 Nissan Leaf.
